Nell Freeman grew up in New York and London and graduated in BA Human Sciences at the University of Oxford in 2002, MSc Public Health for Developing Countries London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine 2003 and MA Photojournalism London College of Printing 2005. Much of her UK and international work reflects this background, with projects focusing on HIV/AIDS, disability, ageing and related social issues on poverty and health.
She currently shoots news exclusively on commission for the Guardian. Her work has also been published in the Independent, the Times, the Telegraph, the Observer, the Irish Times, Marie Claire (UK and USA), Time Out and British Airway's High Life.
She shoots regularly on commission for international NGOs including Christian Aid, World Vision, The International HIV/AIDS Alliance and Mencap, along with commercial clients such as Canon, General Motors, SC Johnson and Birds Eye.
Her work has been exhibited in public spaces, galleries, universities and museums in the UK, USA, France and Kenya. These include St Pancras International train station and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The University of Oxford, and the Eden Project. Her work was recently included in the National Union of Journalists '100 Images Celebrating 100 Years' exhibition and the Association of Photographers 2007 Open Exhibition at the AOP Gallery. She is a 2007 American National Press Photographers Award winner and featured in their 'Women in Photojournalism' exhibition.
